Nationwide outage hits Comindico

A NATIONWIDE outage at Comindico last night blocked internet access for customers ateempting to connect through the company's network.
The problem, flagged by Comindico as an authentication database issue, began at 9:27pm and is believed to have hit thousands of users, with ADSL users in Melbourne particularly affected.
A service slowdown preceded the authentication problems.
According to a Comindico service status webpage, services affected included the company's Internet Dial, Private Network, Business DSL and Access Link services, as well as dial-up and DSL access sold to wholesale customers.
However, customers already logged in were not affected by the issue, a Comindico spokesman said.
All Comindico points of presence (PoPs) around the country were affected by the outage, which was rectified by 11:35pm.
The most recent problems follows a nationwide DSL outage in August, when unforeseen side-effects of planned maintenance by Telstra left Comindico customers unable to connect or only able to connect for short periods.
Since launching in 1999, Comindico has had a chequered history. In April, the company announced it would cut 15 per cent of its workforce, with the board confirming it had asked chief executive John Stuckey to remain on leave until his contract expired in June.
A replacement for Mr Stuckey has yet to be announced.
Yet to turn a profit, the company has burned more than $400 million in startup costs.
