Major TCP Flaw Discoverred
The British National Infrastructure Security Co-ordination Centre has released details of a flaw in TCP, one of the core protocols used by computers on the Internet and on most networks today. This flaw could be used to cause major disruption to almost any device on the Internet.
The major risk is to trunk routers running BGP which is a routing protocol used to determine how data gets from one computer to another across large networks like the Internet. A concerted attack against this flaw could potentially disrupt massive amounts of the Internet for hours.
Government Agencies and technology organisations around the world are working on short and long term fixes for this problem. The major target of such an attack is likely to be core routers however most computer devices may be vulnerable. In addition, attacks on the trunk routers would cause massive delays or failures for large numbers of public network (Internet) users.
